Manchester United have been far from free-scoring this season with summer signing Rasmus Hojlund currently the top scorer with only 13 goals in all competitions.
No player has managed to breach the 10-goal mark in the Premier League and after a brilliant run of scoring in six consecutive games, the Dane has failed to net in his last four outings.
Considering he is only 21 and this is his first season in the English top-flight, such inconsistencies were expected and that is exactly why Erik ten Hag asked the club for further reinforcements last summer.
The club failed to back the manager and he was asked to make do with Marcus Rashford, who was the club’s top-scorer with 30 goals last term, and the perennially injured Anthony Martial.
Striker needed
The Mancunian’s form has fallen off a cliff this campaign and his motivation has come under fire with multiple rumours linking him with an exit despite the forward signing a five-year extension last season.
As for the Frenchman, he is yet to recover from a recent surgery and the club had opted not to trigger the one-year extension option and an exit is likely at the conclusion of the current season.
The new behind-the-scenes team that INEOS are bringing in are expected to brainstorm and proceed with transfer plans and it will be interesting to see who they go after.
The Denmark international has shown glimpses of his obvious talent and he needs further nurturing and regular gametime will be essential and spending big on an elite striker might rob Hojlund of his confidence.
What a season!
There is also an argument to be made for instant results considering how poorly this campaign has gone. One player who was linked with a January switch to Old Trafford was Serhou Guirassy of Stuttgart.
The 28-year-old has 26 goals and two assists in 24 games across all competitions and is the second highest scorer in the Bundesliga, behind Harry Kane.
The Guinea international is interested in playing in the Premier League but the Bundesliga club want to keep hold of their star striker, especially if they secure Champions League qualification for next season.
However, the striker has a release clause of only £15 million in his contract which is set to become active in the summer and a host of English clubs are interested in activating that deal as per HITC Football.
“Sources have told HITC that Serhou Guirassy remains keen on sealing a move to the Premier League this summer.
“Guirassy did not move in January, but his clause becomes active again this summer and HITC is told that the Premier League interest has remained since the turn of the year and that the player is ‘ready to make the move’ but is fully concentrated on a good end to the season with Stuttgart.
PL interest in Guirassy
“HITC is told that Manchester United, Newcastle United, Tottenham Hotspur, Crystal Palace, Wolverhampton Wanderers, Fulham and West Ham United have all watched Guirassy in action in recent months. There is also interest from Italy and Spain.”
Guirassy’s current deal is valid until 2026 and Stuttgart are desperate to hold on to their record-breaking hitman who is level with club legend Mario Gomez for the most goals scored in a single season.
The former Stade Rennais man is expected to hit the front soon and Stuttgart remain in negotiations with the “incredible” player hoping to either remove or increase that release clause amount.
He is a penalty box predator, a dimension that United currently lack and he could prove to be an excellent cut-price acquisition.
