Manchester United ended the season on a positive note, salvaging the whole wretched year with a single victory that sent them into Europa League next season.
However, the euphoria of one positive result shouldn’t cloud over the problems that persisted throughout the season.
Defensive combinations were a problem due to injuries but it was a pattern where Erik ten Hag’s side had to sacrifice one end to fortify another.
Rasmus Hojlund did as well as a youngster playing his first proper season as a started in a top-five league.
Still, a team of United’s calibre which plays in multiple competitions in a season needs more than just one undercooked striker to get them through the season.
Therefore, a striker was a priority in this window, preferably in line with INEOS’ latest diktat of pivoting towards younger players.
Benjamin Sesko was a primary target, with the prodigy impressing at RB Leipzig this season after joining them amid interest from United at the time as well.
The player is once again up for a move after establishing himself in Bundesliga but it looks like the boat has sailed for a potential move to United.
Mirror reports that Sesko prefers a move to Arsenal over United and has reportedly already said yes to the Gunners.
A deal worth £45 million for him is in the works and he could rock up in North London against United next season.
Arsenal went toe-to-toe with Manchester City for the title this season and a lack of a clinical striker up top was recognised as their weak point.
It is why they have also been linked with an audacious swoop for Marcus Rashford as they try to add more firepower to their attack.
It is unlikely that they add both Sesko and Rashford to their team due to the finances involved in either deal.
In the meantime, United might be well off targeting a more seasoned veteran anyways instead of doubling down on Hojlund gamble and getting two unproven strikers thrown at the deep end.
