The FA Cup triumph has not changed Manchester United’s need to strengthen all across the park after the team struggled throughout the campaign.
The defence, in particular, hugely let down the club with the Red Devils conceding 85 goals this campaign as well as the joint-most during the Champions League group stages.
Raphael Varane has already announced he is leaving at the conclusion of his contract while Jonny Evans could follow suit with the club yet to offer an extension to the Northern Ireland international.
Victor Lindelof has also been linked with an exit while journalist Ben Jacobs has suggested that Harry Maguire could also depart with a surprising club eyeing the former skipper.
Maguire’s improved season
The England international enjoyed a career renaissance this term amid the injury crisis that plagued the club, with the former Leicester City star starting 25 times across all competitions as opposed to only 16 in Erik ten Hag’s first season as manager.
The Dutch manager praised his attitude and his willingness to play through the pain for the club and his standing certainly improved at the club this term.
West Ham were close to agreeing a move for the Englishman only for it to break down due to wage demands. The Hammers remain interested but Bundesliga giants Bayern Munich could swoop in the summer.
Thomas Tuchel was keeping a close eye on the 31-year-old and even new boss Vincent Kompany likes Maguire while Harry Kane is an international teammate of the United defender.
“I think with Maguire, they’re never going to say no to an offer that’s too good to turn down, but he’s been outstanding this season and proved a lot of critics wrong,” TBR relayed Jacobs as saying.
Bayern want Maguire
“West Ham United still have an interest in Harry Maguire, and I’m told as well, Bayern, even though they signed Eric Dier, might be a club to watch.
“But the thing about Bayern is this was all in Tuchel’s era, and before board upheaval so everything’s changing at Bayern and is very fluid. But they still may want another centre-back, so don’t rule out that one as well, because I know that Vincent Kompany has a lot of respect for Harry Maguire.”
United had paid €87 million for his services back in 2019 and with two years left in his current deal, United are expected to sustain a heavy loss on his sale.
The Peoples Person had relayed that the club was open to moving him on for €23 million but if Bayern’s interest is true, then they should try and get a better price.
Despite a decent season, United should ideally look for an upgrade but whether they can overhaul the entire defence in one window remains to be seen.
