How on earth have we reached game week 3 and be in an injury crisis already? Well, unfortunately you only needed to look into recent history to be able to see that this was always likely to happen.
You simply cannot ignore the fact that both N’Golo Kante and Mateo Kovacic have become injury prone, especially last season. These are two key midfielders who make a big difference to Chelsea when they are on the pitch.
At the weekend against Leeds, we were forced to start Conor Gallagher in what for me, is not his best position, to subsidise the injuries.
Thomas Tuchel after the game said that he doesn’t need a new midfielder and names the ones he has.
I am giving him the benefit of the doubt and hoping these comments were tactical and that he can see that we actually DO need to sign a new centre midfielder BEFORE the window ends.
It’s the elephant in the room and needs addressing. Will we address it? I very much doubt it now, and that would create real problems for us this season.
In my view, it should have always been the priority position that we went for this summer, but for some odd reason, it seems to have been ignored, as of now at least. Time will tell, let’s see if it’s addressed.
But it concerns me going into the season with the only double pivot options being two injury prone players, and one who always suffers with fatigue come midway through the season in the shape of Jorginho.
In my view, there are no other comfortable double pivot deeper centre midfielders in our squad, and I’m not accepting Ruben Loftus-Cheek as one.
