Manchester United could face competition from Atletico Madrid for VfB Stuttgart striker, Serhou Guirassy.
The Red Devils have struggled for goals all season with only Rasmus Hojlund and Bruno Fernandes breaking double figures for the side as we approach the end of April.
The lack of striking support for Rasmus Hojlund has torpedoed United’s chances of Champions League football with Anthony Martial spending most of the season injured and Marcus Rashford spectacularly falling short of expectations.
As a result, United have been linked to a host of strikers like Joshua Zirkzee and Benjamin Sesko.
However, the club’s interest in Guirassy was heavily reported in January and it has recently been revealed that they did in fact make a move for the striker, but no deal came to pass.
It has been reported that the forward would prefer a move to the Premier League in the summer after enjoying a breakout year in Germany.
Nonetheless, Spanish paper AS reckon that Atletico Madrid could be a threat to United’s ongoing plans to land the striker.
It is claimed that the club from the Spanish capital is following “Stuttgart’s Guinean striker, who has 25 goals in the German league”.
Like United, it is stated that Atletico have struggled for goals all season and that only Antoine Griezmann has his future secure in the striker’s department as the likes of Memphis Depay and Alvaro Morata could be on the move.
Therefore, “several names appear on the table for the 2024-25 season. One of them is Serhou Guirassy, one of the sensations of the Bundesliga. At 28 years old, Stuttgart’s Franco-Guinean forward is performing wonderfully for the German club. His numbers are astonishing. He has scored 25 goals in 23 Bundesliga games and two goals in two German Cup games. In total, 27 goals that put his team in third place, with the same points as Bayern, second. He has just received the award for best player of the month for March in Germany”.
Los Colchoneros are said to be attracted to his physical stature and his affordable release clause of €17.5 million. As a result “he is a very desirable player”.
Guirassy is certainly an interesting option for a host of teams around Europe.
There is concern that the forward may be a flash in the plan as despite being in his late twenties, he has never had a season like this.
Nonetheless, with such a tiny release clause and clearly the player being in the form of his life, perhaps it is worth the risk, especially for clubs like United and Atletico, who are so poor at finding the back of the net.
