European giants Bayern Munich and Ajax are reportedly in a “tug of war” for Manchester United boss Erik ten Hag and believe he will inevitably be relieved of his duties very soon at Old Trafford.
There is still a strong chance that Ten Hag will be sacked as United boss owing to the very poor and underwhelming season he has overseen.
As his future hands in the balance, United continue to be strongly linked with multiple other managers.
Bayern and Thomas Tuchel – who is ironically a target for United to potentially succeed Ten Hag – are set to depart ways, Bayern of course played their final game of the season on Saturday as they lost 4-2 to Hoffenheim.
The Bundesliga giants have found it hard to find a suitable replacement for Tuchel and have faced multiple rejections from several top coaches.
Meanwhile, Ajax, who have been on a downward trajectory since Ten Hag left Amsterdam to join United, are also looking for someone to assume the hot seat.
Ajax were keen on Graham Potter but talks collapsed. According to The Mirror’s Simon Mullock, the Eredivisie club are monitoring Ten Hag’s situation and could swoop in for him if an opportunity presents itself. However, they will likely need to ward off competition from Bayern but both teams believe the race is on.
“Erik ten Hag is still being courted by Bayern Munich and Ajax as D-Day at Manchester United looms.”
“Both Bayern and former club Ajax believe the Dutchman will depart Old Trafford at the end of the season – even if United can land an FA Cup Final shock by beating rivals Manchester City next Saturday.”
“Ajax are also in negotiations with Francesco Farioli, the Italian coach of Nice, the French club also owned by Ratcliffe. But they continue to monitor their former manager’s situation in Manchester.”
“Ten Hag also has a history with Bayern, having managed the German club’s reserve team when Pep Guardiola was in charge at the Allianz Arena.”
The newspaper adds that Ten Hag want Sir Jim Ratcliffe to publicly back him and show commitment by offering a new deal – something that has not been forthcoming so far.
Mullock also notes that Ten Hag may opt to walk away and pursue a fresh challenge if he feels Ratcliffe and INEOS don’t have faith in him.
