Manchester United’s transfer policy has left a lot to be desired over the last decade with the hierarchy at the club making mistake after mistake in the transfer market.
The culture around Old Trafford has meant a plethora of top names have failed to leave their mark in Manchester as well as list of potential stars from the youth ranks failing to fulfil their potential after breaking into the first team.
Creative midfielder Angel Gomes is certainly one that falls into that category, having been touted for a huge future at the club.
However, after becoming the youngest player to represent United since Duncan Edwards in 1953, Gomes struggled to get going and made just ten appearances in a red shirt, only four of which in came the Premier League.
In the summer of 2020, the academy product decided he wasn’t going to sign a new deal in Manchester and moved to Ligue 1 side Lille on a free transfer.
Since then, Gomes has showed his quality, starring in the French league following a spell at Boavista in Portugal on loan, and is now attracting interest from top clubs around Europe.
As reported by TBR football, Tottenham Hotspur are keen on bringing the 23-year-old back to the Premier League, with Aston Villa and West Ham also monitoring him closely.
There is also interest from Germany and Italy, with the likes of Borussia Dortmund and AC Milan amongst those interested, should he leave the Paulo Fonseca’s side.
It’s reported United have been keeping tabs on Gomes’ progress in France and haven’t closed the door on re-signing the midfield man, who has eight assists to his name this season.
However, it’s Spurs who are the frontrunners for his signature and United fans might be forced to see another player leave the club and flourish right under their nose.
The fact United allowed a player of Gomes potential walk out the door for nothing rather sums up the shoddy approach leading figures at the club have showed in the market recent years.
Gomes was one of the most highly rated players to come through the youth teams over the last decade and United should have made more of his talent.
Old Trafford has become a graveyard for players to showcase their skills and this is something INEOS must address if they are to get the club back to the top of English football.
