It has been a successful first season at the helm of Manchester United for manager Erik ten Hag and he still has the chance to finish the campaign on an even more promising note.
Champions League qualification remains in United’s own hands and the FA Cup final beckons on June 3. Despite a Carabao Cup triumph, the Dutchman has had to toil extremely hard due to squad deficiencies.
Ten Hag has not rotated as much as fans would have liked but the manager must have good reasons for choosing that path. And it has come back to haunt him in the last couple of weeks.
United need another quality midfielder
One area where United have struggled recently is in the centre of the park where the ever-reliable Casemiro has looked leggy while Christian Eriksen has not had the same impact as he was having pre-injury.
Scott McTominay remains sidelined while Fred has failed to grab his chances when giving a starting berth. It is imperative that the Red Devils bring in a versatile presence in the middle of the park ahead of next season.
United have been linked with plenty of midfielders and recent reports seem to suggest that United are open to going back for a rumoured previous target.
As already reported by The Peoples Person, Ten Hag has personally got in touch with Juventus midfielder Adrien Rabiot regarding a Bosman move in the summer.
The 28-year-old was extremely close to a move to Old Trafford last year before wage issues forced the deal to stall with United signing the Brazilian instead.
But Ten Hag remains an admirer and it is easy to see why. Rabiot has enjoyed the season of his life in terms of goal contributions, with 11 goals and four assists in 44 appearances across all competitions.
The France international can play as the advanced midfielder in a two-man system or as the defensive pivot with his ability to drive forward with the ball of particular interest to United.
Rabiot PL move looming large
As per transfer expert Fabrizio Romano, a Premier League move seems the likeliest outcome with his Juventus contract ending in June with an agreement on a contract extension yet to be reached.
“Rabiot remains of interest to United, but nothing has been agreed, he’s simply a name being discussed internally. Rabiot has a dream to play in the Premier League, so that will be his priority.
“But he will also have an offer to sign a new contract at Juventus, so he will decide his future at the end of the season. Rabiot knows about United’s interest, but there are also other Premier League clubs and so that looks like the most likely option for him,” the Italian wrote in his Caughtoffside substack.
