Former Manchester United midfielder Morgan Schneiderlin has revealed his attempts to lure Sadio Mane to Old Trafford back in 2015.
As reported by keepup.com, the Frenchman admits he spoke to Mane about joining him in Manchester, after playing with him in Southampton.
Louis van Gaal was a keen admirer of the Senegalese and approached Southampton regarding the transfer of the forward.
Schneiderlin had a good relationship with Mane but saLouis Van Gaalt convince him to join him at United.
“I remember that when I signed, Louis Van Gaal was asking me about him (Mane) coming to Man United and I tried my best for him to come as well,” he said.
Schneiderlin says that despite his efforts, Mane had his sights set elsewhere and eventually signed for Liverpool a year later.
“He wanted to stay one more year (at Southampton) and go to Liverpool,” he added.
Mane went on to be a great success at Liverpool, winning a league title and becoming one of the best players in the Premier League.
He has since moved to German giants Bayern Munich and despite an injury-hit maiden season, he remains on course to win the Bundesliga.
Since Mane’s move from Southampton almost a decade ago, United have struggled for any kind of consistent form and wasted an eye-watering amount of money on failed transfers.
Missing out on Mane rather sums up United’s luck in the transfer market over that period with the club still in need of reinforcements to mount a serious charge for the Premier League title.
Erik ten Hag will be hoping for better luck in the summer window, after a season of progress has left United fans dreaming of getting back to the top in the coming years.
