Matej Kovar has been tipped for success by Sparta Prague manager Brian Priske following the Manchester United goalkeeper’s performance against Hradec Kralove.
The 22-year-old is currently on loan at Sparta and is already halfway to matching the appearance tally he managed at Burton Albion last season.
He made only six League One appearance during his six-month spell in the Midlands last season but looks to have earned his manager’s trust in his current loan.
Priske was effusive in his praise for the keeper and, judging by his comments after the match, is likely to continue to start him.
“He shows exactly what we expected from him. He is a tall young goalkeeper, and his performance today was very good.
“He made a number of excellent saves and has a big part to play in the victory.
“Although he behaved differently than usual in several situations in the first half, he is the future of Czech football.”
That is big praise indeed and shows just how highly Kovar is regarded in Prague.
The same can be said for how well he is thought of around Old Trafford, with Manchester United ensuring the promising goalkeeper put pen to paper on a new deal before allowing him to leave on loan.
He is now contracted to the Red Devils until 2025 and will hope to move up the pecking order on his return to Old Trafford in the summer.
While he is likely to spend at least another year on loan, a continuation of his performances for Sparta Prague and the Czech Republic Under-21’s will certainly put him in Erik ten Hag’s thoughts.
But with a full season of first team experience, the sky is the limit for Matej Kovar.
