Manchester United’s ability to sign either Amadou Onana or Joshua Kimmich this summer will depend on Bayern Munich’s transfer movements if reports are to be believed.
Earlier this month, Onana’s representatives allegedly reached out to United to ask about the club’s transfer plans, thus indicating an interest in joining the club.
Last weekend, it appeared as if United advanced in their pursuit of the Everton midfielder as it was reported that the Red Devils submitted a €60 million bid for Onana.
Three days later, however, it appeared as if United could be in the market for Joshua Kimmich, Bayern Munich’s versatile genius who is able to play as a right-back as well as a defensive midfielder.
With just one year left on the German’s contract, The Peoples Person relayed that Bayern Munich were prepared to let him go for around £25 million to £34 million this summer so as to avoid losing him for free next year.
While United appear to be spoilt for choice when it comes to signing a competent defensive midfielder, it now appears as if Bayern could play a pivotal role in determining whether United will manage to sign either player this summer.
Mundo Deportivo reported this morning that the Bundesliga club are turning their focus to signing Onana after their talks for Fulham midfielder João Palhinha reached a roadblock.
The Spanish newspaper added that Onana is an admirer of new Bayern coach and fellow Belgian Vincent Kompany, with this aspect working in the Bavarian club’s favour.
Still, with Bayern turning their attention to Onana and Real Sociedad’s Mikel Merino according to the article, the club appears more willing to allow Kimmich to depart particularly if any team submits a good enough offer.
A Bayern player since 2015, Kimmich has enjoyed enormous success at the club, winning eight Bundesliga titles, three German Cups, and one Champions League title.
While last season was a disappointing one for Bayern as they finished second in the Bundesliga, Kimmich enjoyed an impressive personal season as he scored one goal and registered six assists – impressive for a right-back.
With 96% passing accuracy, 2.6 key passes per game, and 70% long-ball accuracy, Kimmich has once again proven his quality with the ball at his feet.
His 1.6 tackles per game and five ball recoveries are a testament to his defensive capabilities, as is winning 60% of his total ground duels. Such statistics show how well-suited he is to both his natural full-back position as well as his ability to shift to the midfield, with his strong defensive and attacking capabilities. (Sofascore)
As for Onana, he showed remarkable physicality over the past Premier League campaign, winning 66% of his total duels and making use of his 195 cm height to win 74% of his aerial duels. He also made 2.4 tackles per game and 5.3 ball recoveries while completing 85% of his passes with 71% long-ball accuracy. (Sofascore)
While Onana certainly appears to be a player in his prime with plenty more to offer at just 22 years of age, either one of these stars would be an asset for United next season.
Although the race to sign either player maybe influenced by Bayern’s next move, United would do well to keep an eye on both players in the hopes of securing a deal.
