Malo Gusto is scheduled for a medical with Chelsea after a €30 million transfer fee was agreed with Olympique Lyonnais.
Gusto, 19, will rejoin Lyon on loan until the end of the season as part of the deal.
The French right-back had been linked with United since last summer and has continued to be included in reports surrounding a move to Old Trafford this January.
Erik ten Hag was keen to reinforce his options at right-back during the summer given Aaron Wan-Bissaka’s insecure place in the squad and Brandon Williams’ long injury spell.
The young Frenchman emerged as a target due to his offensive-minded style and ability to play in various areas of the pitch, two aspects fitting with Ten Hag’s Total Football ideals.
As part of an astronomical sweep across the transfer window, Todd Boehly is on the verge of making Gusto his newest signing, according to various media outlets.
Fabrice Hawkins of RMC Sport has reported that Gusto has already arrived in London ahead of his medical at Chelsea.
He will remain in Ligue 1 until the end of the season at Lyon, where former Red Laurent Blanc is manager.
With a dreadfully limited bank balance, United will have to wait until the summer to make any more significant moves in terms of incoming players. The Glazer family is seeking a full sale of the club.
Although reports suggested that United had asked Gusto to wait until the summer, Chelsea have used their rivals’ unsure and precarious financial and ownership situation to convince Gusto that pastures are fresher in London.
César Azpilicueta’s approaching contract expiration (June 2024) and Reece James’ injury struggles would also appeal to Gusto’s aspirations of becoming a Premier League starting right-back.
Diogo Dalot had been one of United’s most impressive and consistent performers prior the World Cup whilst Wan-Bissaka has made a recent resurgence in the team.
Meanwhile, Ethan Laird, 21, continues to gain plaudits on loan at Queen’s Park Rangers in the Championship.
