Manchester United are set to hold talks with Jadon Sancho before deciding on his future, a new report claims.
Sancho has been on loan at Borussia Dortmund this season after a public spat with manager Erik ten Hag.
The manager said at a press conference that Sancho had been dropped due to training badly and the player took to social media to refute the claim, suggesting that there was favouritism at play.
Ten Hag demanded an apology that was not forthcoming and the loan with the German side was swiftly agreed.
A successful season has ensued in Dortmund, including an appearance in the Champions League final. The German outfit are said to be very keen to keep the England man but United’s mooted transfer asking price of £50 million is said to be prohibitive.
However, an update from ESPN this morning claims that, in fact, no decision has yet been made on whether to sell the winger or not. Sources close to the club have told the outfit that:
“United want to speak to Sancho before deciding what action to take this summer. Technical director Jason Wilcox and director of football negotiations Matt Hargreaves are set to discuss the situation with the 24-year-old and his representatives before the start of pre-season training.”
As Sancho has not been included in the England squad for Euro 2024, this means he would be in the first batch of players to return for pre-season, ahead of the first friendly game on July 15th.
Reports have differed as to whether Sancho wants to return to United or not. Some claim he wants to move on no matter what, whereas others say it is dependent on whether Ten Hag keeps his job as manager.
Reporter Rob Dawson says that “A source has told ESPN that a move remains the most likely outcome, although Sancho’s significant market value and high wages make a permanent transfer problematic.”
What is perhaps interesting about the report is that those meeting with Sancho are Wilcox and Hargreaves, with Ten Hag’s name conspicuous by its absence. At best, this suggests the decision will be taken out of his hands and at worst, it means it is already known he will not be around to take part.
Another element to the story is United’s pursuit of Crystal Palace’s Michael Olise, which is widely reported to be genuine. His addition would leave United with several wingers – Marcus Rashford, Alejandro Garnacho, Antony, Amad Diallo, Facundo Pellistri, Olise, Sancho and even, potentially Mason Greenwood, whose own transfer situation is complicated.
It seems more than likely that at least three of those names will not be at Old Trafford next season – the question is, which three?
