Manchester United consolidated their position in the race for top four in the Premier League with a convincing 2-0 win against Nottingham Forest at the City Ground over the weekend.
The Red Devils now travel to the home of Europa League specialists Sevilla for their highly-anticipated quarter-final second leg showdown at the Ramón Sánchez Pizjuán Stadium on Thursday.
With the Glazers on the verge of completing the sale of the club, times are looking bright for the red half of Manchester.
Following the takeover, the 20-time English champions will be on the lookout for reinforcements in the summer, and a number of names have been linked with the club in recent months.
One name that keeps popping up is Inter Milan’s Andre Onana.
The Cameroonian international joined the Nerazzurri as a free agent last summer, after his contract with Ajax ran out.
The 27-year-old has since made 32 appearances across all competitions for Inter in which he has racked up an impressive 15 clean sheets.
Onana enjoyed several successful seasons with Ten Hag in Amsterdam, winning multiple league titles under the Dutchman’s tutelage, and it seems a reunion may be in the works.
According to Italian outlet Corriere dello Sport, Manchester United have ‘moved in the most concrete way in the wake of Ten Hag’s indications’ for Onana, and a formal offer is forthcoming.
The report goes on to say that the next few weeks will be crucial for the Red Devils if this deal is to go through, with a price tag of ‘no less than €40m’ being bandied about for the La Masia graduate.
David de Gea has been the undisputed No 1 under Ten Hag this term, with the likes of Martin Dubravka, Jack Butland and Tom Heaton standing in reserve.
The Spaniard’s contract runs out this summer, and there remain doubts over his long-term future at the club.
Despite correctly being hailed as a United legend, De Gea is not a competent passer, does not sweep well enough, and struggles to claim crosses, three qualities that form the bedrock of the modern day sweeper-keeper.
Onana excels at the aforementioned traits, and is particularly good with his feet, making him an ideal choice to replace United’s long time custodian in goal.
If this transfer does come about, the Red Devils will have found the perfect heir for De Gea’s throne.
