Manchester United look set to miss out on potentially singing French centre-back Evan Ndicka, who is reportedly in advanced negotiations with AS Roma.
The Eintracht Frankfurt defender has attracted plenty of attention from many of Europe’s elite football clubs, including United.
The Red Devils are currently undergoing a defensive crisis that underscores the need for reinforcements, with starting pair Lisandro Martinez and Raphael Varane currently unavailable.
United also appear to be parting ways with Harry Maguire this summer.
With Erik ten Hag potentially looking to replace the England international with a more reliable, ball-playing defender, Ndicka was thought to be an option.
Ndicka is an imposing, left-footed centre-back who has grabbed the limelight following a couple of impressive seasons in the Bundesliga.
The player will be out of contract in the summer, which has triggered suitors to ramp up their interest. However, it is Roma who have made the most progress.
Barcelona were previously thought to have been favourites for his signature, but interest from the Camp Nou appears to have cooled.
A Calcio Mercato report now indicates that, barring any surprises, Ndicka is most likely to sign for Jose Mourinho‘s side, with the club having tabled an offer with the player and his representatives.
Reportedly, Roma are offering a four-year contract worth 2 million per season, with additional bonuses.
As Ndicka is yet to agree on terms with Roma or any other club, United still have some time to make a move, but it seems likely that the club may have shifted its sights to other targets.
Crystal Palace’s Marc Guehi, another player who fits the ball-playing mould, is said to be under consideration.
United have also expressed a strong interest in Napoli’s Kim Min-jae who may be the number one defensive target for the Reds this summer.
