Just like Manchester United’s ever-changing transfer policy since Sir Alex Ferguson‘s retirement, the club’s loan system has also been a mixture of hits and misses.
One player who had arrived at United amid much fanfare was Atalanta starlet Amad Diallo. The club rated him so highly that despite the trickster being only 18 at the time, the club sanctioned £37.2million for his purchase.
After chances were few and far between in his debut campaign, it was decided that a loan move would be the best possible scenario for the winger to continue his development.
However, his move to Rangers did not go as planned with doubts raised about his mentality and physicality.
New manager Erik ten Hag took a look at the 20-year-old and decided another loan was required as he was still not up to the standards required.
Amad has hit the jackpot at Sunderland
The Red Devils had decided that playing in England was necessary for the Ivorian to get accustomed to the conditions and realise what it takes to succeed in the harsh world of English football.
A move to Championship side Sunderland followed and once again, it seemed like another loan move would fizzle out and the young attacker would return to his parent club shorn of confidence.
But this time, Amad did not back down and despite demotion to the Under-21s for his loan club, he kept grafting and eventually forced Black Cats boss Tony Mowbray to select him from the start against league leaders Burnley.
And the United star has not looked back since, scoring five times in the last 10 games while also registering an assist. His strike against Wigan on Thursday was the pick of the lot.

Not only in terms of output, but his work-rate, dribbling ability willingness to track back and help out his teammates have all come in for praise from his new boss.
So much so that he now considered a cult hero at Tyne and Wear. And fans have been demanding that the club tries to keep a hold of him for a longer period.
United, on the other hand, even included a recall clause in his loan deal and with goals drying up at Old Trafford and Cristiano Ronaldo’s departure, there were calls for the club to recall their potent winger.
Even the Sunderland boss had answered these queries and had hoped that Amad’s parent club would allow him to continue his development for the Championship outfit.
Transfer specialist Fabrizio Romano has now claimed that the 20-time English champions are really impressed with what has transpired during the Ivory Coast international’s loan spell.
United should allow Amad to continue at Sunderland
“Manchester United are really happy with Amad Diallo and his development on loan at Sunderland. Goals, quality and attitude have been excellent,” the Italian tweeted.
While there have been no discussions on a potential recall, the club have rebuffed permanent approaches from certain Italian clubs still believing that Amad can come good.
“There’s no buy option, also Man Utd have turned down approaches from Italy for permanent move months ago.”
A recall would halt Amad’s development as despite United’s lack of firepower up front, Amad is not physically capable of leading the line in the Premier League.
He can excel as a winger but the club are already well-0stocked at the moment in that regard.
