Goalscoring has been a major issue that has held back Manchester United this season and manager Erik ten hag is hell-bent on righting this wrong.
The Red Devils are currently the second-lowest scorers in the top nine and their recent win against relegation-battlers Everton once again highlighted the Dutch boss’ problems.
Marcus Rashford remains to the team’s top-scorer and is the only player to have hit double digits for the season. But when it comes to one-on-one finishing, he still has a long way to go.
Anthony Martial returned from injury to score United’s second goal but injury problems have meant Ten Hag cannot fully trust the Frenchman in the next campaign.
Loan signing Wout Weghorst remains a substitute player at best and that is why the club are desperate to bring in an elite striker ahead of next season.
United need a top striker next season
The 20-time English league champions have been linked with a move for Tottenham top-scorer Harry Kane, Serie A leading scorer Victor Osimhen and Benfica hot-shot Goncalo Ramos.
But any move for the trio would require record sums in excess of €100 million with all three clubs difficult to negotiate with.
That is exactly why United are keeping backup options ready in case a deal for the top targets goes south. The latest name to be linked with a move to Old Trafford is Feyenoord star Santiago Giménez.
The Mexican international has been a revelation since his move to the Eredivisie last summer, and is the top scorer for the league leaders with 18 goals and four assists to his name from 37 matches in all competitions this season.
The 21-year-old has taken very little time to adjust to the pace of European football and his performances have seen interest from Premier League clubs such as Brighton, Crystal Palace and Newcastle.
Now according to W Deportes, United have also joined the race for the Mexican forward with United already having made “first contact”. Ten Hag knows a lot about the Dutch league and he will be best placed to sign off on the deal.
Santiago Giménez could be United’s answer
“W SPORTS has learned that Manchester United is the team most interested in Santi’s services.
“Viewers of the Red Devils already have several games, not only going to see him play, but there has also already been a talk with the player’s environment and to see the possibility of, in the summer, starting negotiations for his signing,” the report claimed.
The former Cruz Azul star is is valued at €9million according to Transfermarkt but is said to have a release clause close to €20million.
United have previously had Javier Hernandez, popularly known as Chicharito, from Mexico and he turned out to be quite the goal-poacher during his United spell.
A similar left-field signing could well be the answer to Ten Hag’s scoring woes.
