Manchester United have reportedly joined the race to land Bayern Munich midfielder Jamal Musiala, who is attracting interest from most of Europe’s elite clubs.
United’s are expected to be in the market for a midfielder in the summer transfer window – a need that will only become more urgent especially if Casemiro and Christian Eriksen leave the club.
Casemiro continues to be strongly linked with a switch to the Saudi Pro League while Eriksen, who has made no secret of his displeasure with the amount of playing time he has received since the emergence of Kobbie Mainoo, has been mentioned to be on the radar of Super Lig giants Galatasaray.
A shock report from Spanish outlet Fichajes has suggested that United are weighing up a big-money swoop for Bayern’s Musiala.
The newspaper relays that the Red Devils have “set their sights” on the “rising star”.
“Musiala, who is in the final two years of his contract with Bayern, has been linked with the likes of Manchester City, Real Madrid and Paris Saint-Germain ahead of the summer transfer market.”
“With his future up in the air, it is understandable that these football giants are keeping an eye on his situation.”
“The young talent would not be a cheap acquisition, with estimates suggesting his transfer could be around €120 million, a sum that could be a challenge for United given their need for investment in various areas of the team.”
Fichajes add that Man City appear to be a far more likely destination for the highly-rated Musiala in comparison to Ten Hag’s side. The reigning Premier League champions boast of almost unlimited financial resources and are plotting replacements for Ilkay Gundogan who joined Barcelona last summer and the ageing Kevin de Bruyne.
For Bayern this season, Musiala has plundered 12 goals and six assists in 36 appearances across all competitions.
However, United should hardly be considered realistic candidates to secure Musiala’s services. A player of the calibre of the 21-year-old is only likely to leave the Allianz Arena for suitors who will guarantee him the chance to compete for the highest honours and the biggest trophies. United can’t offer him this opportunity at the moment as they are a club in the middle of a long-term project.
In addition to this, as pointed out by Fichajes, the 20-time English champions are not in a position to splash such ludicrous amounts on just one player when there are multiple other areas of the pitch that also require to be urgently addressed.
If reports from Fichajes are not substantiated by more reliable sources regarding United’s interest in Musiala, it’s wise to regard these rumors as mere speculation and hopeful conjecture.
