Manchester United could finally land Marco Reus, a target they have coveted for over a decade.
One of the biggest problems in this campaign for the Red Devils is finding the back of the net as no team in the Premier League’s top half has scored fewer goals than United.
This lack of threat can be seen in the fact that only Bruno Fernandes, Rasmus Hojlund and Scott McTominay have broken double figures for goals in all competitions.
The midfield has also been a disaster zone at times, as only Fernandes and Kobbie Mainoo can come out of this season with any sort of pride after some catastrophic performances from other United midfielders such as Casemiro and Sofyan Amrabat.
United have been linked to numerous players such as Joao Neves and Andre to fix the problems but The Express have fascinatingly mentioned one name that has interested decision makers at Old Trafford for over a decade.
The outlet reports that “United are set to be offered the chance to sign Marco Reus this summer, having targeted him on countless occasions over the past 10 years” and “the opportunity to acquire the services of a seasoned role model on a free transfer could be the perfect way for them to get the ball rolling this summer.”
Reus has already confirmed that he will be leaving Borussia Dortmund at the end of the season.
The paper goes on to suggest that “United’s admiration of Reus has been no secret over the years and the forward fits the bill in terms of what Ten Hag may look for when scouting the market for leaders, especially if the soon-to-be free agent is willing to be a rotational option next season.”
Reus certainly has some magic left as he has played 37 times this season across three competitions with 14 goal contributions.
With Bruno Fernandes heavily overplayed and United’s problems with PSR, a free signing of an experienced veteran does make some sense.
Nonetheless, at 34 years of age, it is exactly the type of signing that INEOS have claimed does not interest them any more. In fact, as the article suggests it is exactly the type of signing the Glazers would have sanctioned in the past, thinking of the name rather than the logical fit for the team.
Moreover, it has to be assumed that Mason Mount will be fit to play much more of next season after suffering horrendous luck this season.
Even Christian Eriksen has stated that he is very happy at the club and may even stay next season. This would leave little space for Reus to operate in.
Therefore, while it may be tempting to bring in an experienced player who is still contributing at a high level, whilst United continue to do this, they will never truly build for the future.
