Wolverhampton Wanderers are facing the prospect of losing their prized midfielder, Ruben Neves, this summer.
The 26-year-old is entering the final year of his contract, and there has been very little news on an extension, fuelling further rumours about a possible exit from the Midlands.
According to the Mirror, several top clubs including Barcelona, Real Madrid, Manchester United, and Liverpool have been keeping a close eye on Neves’ contract situation and are known admirers of his style of play.
Wolves will have to make a decision on his future sooner rather than later, and with no agreement in sight, it seems increasingly likely that Neves will be leaving the Molineux in the summer.
The Portuguese International has been a key figure for the club since his arrival from Porto in 2017, when Wolves were still languishing in the second tier of English football.
He has made nearly 250 appearances for the club since, scoring 29 goals and playing a vital role in the Wolves’s rise to becoming an established Premier League side over the last half-a-decade.
Neves’s passing range and ability to control the tempo of the game is unparalleled, and his departure would leave a significant void in the team.
Linked to several top sides over the last couple of summer windows, a transfer never materialized for Neves, but it looks like he may finally be getting his desired move.
Wolves have struggled this season, and find themselves in a relegation dogfight with ten games left to play in the PL.
Manager Julien Lopetegui has stressed on his team’s need to adapt a bold spirit to make it through this tough period and come out unscathed.
“My point of view is it is a lot of good teams fighting with the same aim so we have to be ready to be able to continue in the race, to have the best mentality, with the best way to play”, the Spaniard insisted.
If Wolves are to survive the drop, Neves will have to be at his best during this crucial run of games in the next few months.
If he does succeed in helping them stay up, he will depart in the summer having consolidated his legacy as a modern day Wolves legend.
