Fabrizio Romano believes that Donny van de Beek is here to stay at Manchester United, with Erik ten Hag assured of his potential.
The reliable reporter revealed, speaking to Give Me Sport, that the Red Devils turned down three approaches for the midfielder in the summer.
Two of those approaches came from Premier League rival, while another was from club based in Italy.
Romano said, “In the final days of the summer transfer window, before deadline day, they received three approaches from one Italian and two English clubs for Donny van de Beek.
“They said no because ten Hag is convinced about his potential, so I’m sure they will try to protect the player.”
The Dutchman has endured a torrid time at Old Trafford, registering just four goal contributions across 60 appearances.
He has struggles for gametime, fitness, and injuries, and he has found his place at the club difficult to adapt to.
Seemingly never on the same wavelength as his teammates when he does take to the field, Van de Beek often slowed down promising counterattacking opportunities under Ole Gunnar Solskjaer and managers thereafter.
His lack of general involvement has also been noticeable, with the former Ajax star often completing a scarce number of touches and failing to affect matches.
Despite Ten Hag’s appointment at the club, Van de Beek’s current season has been no improvement on his others in a United shirt.
He played poorly in the first half of the campaign, missed out on the Netherlands World Cup squad, and suffered a season-ending injury against Bournemouth at the start of January.
The news that his manager still believes in him may lift Van de Beek’s spirits somewhat, because, unfortunately, among United fans, few do anymore.
