Manchester United have already signed Leny Yoro to strengthen their backline and have plans to try and sign at least one more centre-back this window.
The Red Devils are still locked in talks with Bayern Munich for Matthijs de Ligt but so far, the Bundesliga club’s valuation has proven to be beyond United.
The Netherlands international is agitating for a move away having already agreed personal terms with the English side, who saw their first bid fall well short.
Jarrad Branthwaite is another top target, mainly for his ability to play on the left-side of the defence. However, Everton have rejected two bids from the 20-time English league champions so far.
United eyeing another CB
Despite a failed takeover, Everton are keen to ward off United’s interest in their talisman and are planning to offer the England international a brand-new deal.
United are not expected to quit anytime soon and should they acquire their key targets, Erik ten Hag has a new plan in mind with regards to utilising Lisandro Martinez.
As per Givemesport, the former Ajax coach wants to try out the Argentine in the defensive midfield role, a position where he played in during his days at Amsterdam.
He could also be deployed as an emergency left-back should the need arise, another position he has experience of playing in under the same coach.
The World Cup winner’s tenaciousness and ability to play line-breaking passes would be perfectly suited to the defensive midfield role and would allow Kobbie Mainoo the licence to get forward and impact the game.
“United insiders at the club’s Carrington training ground believe there could be surprise new roles for Argentinian Martinez at times next season – as a midfield enforcer AND an emergency left-back.
Licha’s new role
“If United can push a deal over the line for de Ligt a youthful partnership of the 24-year-old Dutchman and Yoro would be an enticing prospect.
“When Yoro does play, potentially alongside de Ligt, it would enable Martinez to move into a defensive midfield role alongside Kobbie Mainoo who could occupy a more advanced position than the gritty South American. Martinez is speedy and adept in the tackle as well as having an eye for a forward pass.”
Ten Hag had previously stated that he does not want to use the 2024 Copa America champion in midfield but Casemiro’s disappointing displays last season and the inability to land Manuel Ugarte could potentially change his mind.
Whether this comes to pass remains to be seen but Martinez has shown in the past that he is more than capable of playing in that position.
