Sir Jim Ratcliffe has made it clear that under his stewardship, Manchester United will try and recruit young gems, moving away from the Glazers’ policy of buying only high-profile names.
Academy recruitment suffered as a result of this approach, especially since the retirement of Sir Alex Ferguson, but things are picking up slowly but steadily.
James Overy and Camron Mpofu are some of the names who have been signed for the academy and more are on the way with Football Insider claiming the Red Devils are trying to secure the signing of Tottenham Hotspur sensation Mikey Moore.
The 16-year-old is regarded as one of the brightest talents in the country and under Ange Postecoglou, the England U17 international became Spurs’ youngest-ever Premier League player, going on to win two senior caps last season.
Moore chase
He is a regular member of the U18s and reserves as well, scoring 17 goals and registering 12 assists in 22 games at U18 level. He also scored twice in as many games in the FA Youth Cup.
The Spurs boss is desperate to keep hold of the academy jewel as he sees a bright first-team future for the youngster. However, as per FA rules, he can only sign a professional deal when he turns 17. which is next month.
Manchester City are also in the race and both Manchester clubs have submitted contract offers and the player now has to choose once he turns 17.
“Man City and Man United have made offers to Tottenham sensation Mikey Moore, sources have told Football Insider. Ange Postecoglou is said to be keen to have Moore involved with the first team, such is the level of talent the youngster has shown.
“Moore, 16, has received professional contract offers from multiple top clubs ahead of his 17th birthday next month as the race for his signature hots up.
City vs United for Moore
“Tottenham are also pulling out all the stops to prevent Moore from switching clubs, but FA regulations state he cannot sign a professional deal until he turns 17.”
Apart from the English giants, Champions League finalists Borussia Dortmund are also keen on luring the English youngster to the Bundesliga, the latest in a long line of such acquisitions.
Moore has been part of the Spurs setup since the age of eight and with Postecoglou at the helm, chances for youth graduates to earn first team minutes is expected to increase and the young star might not be too keen on leaving.
He is versatile and can play all across the frontline and it will be interesting to see what he ultimately chooses.
