Years of paying over the odds in the transfer market are taking a toll on Manchester United ahead of new co-owners INEOS’ first summer window.
Sir Jim Ratcliffe cannot dive straight into incomings due to FFP restrictions and will first need to move on players before he can think about recruitment.
There are plans of conducting a massive summer clearout with more than 10 players at risk of being moved on. This includes big-name players such as Raphael Varane and Casemiro.
Due to the costs involved in bringing the aforementioned duo to Old Trafford, their sale will not ease the financial burden too much. However, selling an academy product will represent pure profit and that could be the direction which the club takes.
McTominay’s future
The likes of Mason Greenwood, Brandon Williams, Hannibal Mejbri and Alvaro Fernandez all are likely to be sold while even Marcus Rashford is not safe from a possible cull.
Recently, The Peoples Person had relayed that the club’s most clutch player this season – Scott McTominay, who is another Carrington graduate, is set to earn a new contract after impressing the new minority stakeholders with his decisive impact.
Despite mainly being used as a substitute, the Scot is the club’s second highest goalscorer in the Premier League this season and his goals have been worth 12 points, the most in the division.
Plenty of fans and pundits have been divided in their opinion of the 27-year-old, with plenty claiming he offers very little value apart from goals.
While his passing numbers have been down this season as compared to previous seasons when he was played as a defensive midfielder, his impact has been undeniable.
However, Teamtalk have now reported that Sir Jim is open to offloading the Scotland international with plenty of Premier League sides interested in a deal.
However, his performances this season might mean an increase in his asking price, something other teams might struggle to cough up.
“TEAMtalk sources have revealed that one player that the Red Devils are open to listening to offers for is midfielder Scott McTominay, who has been a key player for them this season.
Will he be sold?
“He has been important for Erik ten Hag but TEAMtalk sources state that Man Utd’s rejigged hierarchy do not see him as good enough to carry the club forward into its new generation.
“TEAMtalk understands that there is strong interest in McTominay from clubs in the Premier League and the Bundesliga. West Ham are one side who have kept tabs on his situation after trying to sign him previously. The Hammers would be in the conversation again this summer but are not willing to pay his expected £40 million asking price.”
The report mentions that the midfielder would like to stay at the club he has grown up at but with his current deal set to expire in 2025, something has to give.
The Red Devils do have the option of triggering a one-year extension while his suitors are currently reluctant to pay more than £25 million.
