I want to start this by saying that even though I am writing the below article, I still think that Chelsea signing Frenkie De Jong this summer is highly unlikely for many reasons.
However, it is something that COULD happen, and is something that we know has probably already been explored by Chelsea recently, and is probably something they will continue to explore.
There is a very weird, and quite frankly disgraceful situation going on at Barcelona right now – they are continuing to sign players after injecting these financial levers into the club, whilst being in a lot of debt and massively struggling.
Not only does this seem wrong on so many levels, they are also apparently asking De Jong to take another pay cut, yet they are still managing to make big money signings this summer. It’s just insanity.
De Jong of course, is looking around at the money the club are spending and wondering why he is being asked to take a pay cut…. Good question. It seems absurd. I have no idea at all why any player would want to join Barcelona right now and get themselves involved in this nonsense.
A report from Diario Sport today suggests that De Jong would only leave Barcelona for Chelsea rather than Manchester United, but at the moment they do not want to pay the asking price. But this could be a situation that Chelsea look to exploit, and one to keep an eye on for sure, at the very least.
