Manchester United legend and former coach Michael Carrick is close to being appointed as the new manager of Middlesbrough.
According to Football Insider, the Englishman is now closer than ever to becoming the new man in charge at the Riverside Stadium.
The 41-year-old has been in talks with Boro to come in as Chris Wilder’s successor.
Talks hit a snag but are now back on and near completion.
So strong was Boro’s desire to have the former United midfielder at the helm that they climbed down from their original hardline position in the negotiation and moved to resurrect the deal.
Such a move would see Carrick take his first major step in solo management. He has a job on his hands, with the club struggling.
Football Insider’s report is backed by Talksport’s account of the situation which goes on to add that Middlesbrough wish to have the former England international in the job as early as the weekend, just in time for the clash against Huddersfield.

Carrick had a short spell as United boss when Ole Gunnar Solksjaer was sacked after a string of poor results.
During his brief spell, he helped the Red Devils to two wins and a draw.
He did well to stop the rot when all seemed to be going wrong. The former star was soon replaced by interim manager Ralf Rangnick who did not have as much luck.
Rangnick admitted that he tried to persuade Carrick to stay on and join his coaching staff, but the soon-to-be Boro boss insisted that he would step aside along his other coaching compatriots that formed Solksjaer’s backroom staff.
Hopefully, Carrick has a wonderful and fruitful spell with Middlesbrough and uses the opportunity as a stepping stone to greater managerial positions.
