Sunderland boss Tony Mowbray has confirmed Amad Daillo will return to Manchester United at the end of his loan spell.
Diallo has enjoyed a very productive season on Wearside, underlined by his nomination for Championship Young Player of the Year.
As reported by The Athletic, Mowbray said although he would love to keep Amad for another season, he expects the player to be part of United’s pre-season squad.
“It would be great if we could say, ‘Let’s keep that story going’. The kid, he would do it again. He is playing every week, he scores, the fans love him,” he said.
“I think Manchester United are happy, but I think the next step is for them to take Amad on pre-season to America. That’s what I think is going to happen. Then they’ll see how he gets on,” he said.
Amad has scored 12 goals in his 36 Championship appearances at Sunderland and has been a consistent threat for Mowbray’s side.
The Sunderland boss expects his performances to have caught Erik ten Hag’s eye and it’ll be up to the Dutchman to decide his future after seeing him up close with the United group.
“I’m sure he’s been watching Amad’s clips from games. Just as I watch all of our players who are out on loan. But he’ll need to see him on a daily basis and feel what he brings,” said Mowbray.
Amad will be part of Mowbray’s team on Monday at Preston, with Sunderland needing to win and hope other results go their way if they are to make the Championship play-offs.
The 20-year-old, who joined United from Atalanta in January 2021 for a fee of £30 million, is yet to get his career off the ground at Old Trafford.
Inclusion on the tour would appear to be the perfect chance for the Ivorian to prove his worth to the United boss and force his way into Ten Hag’s plans for next season and beyond.
